今日も授業中の、先生のシンプルそうで難しい質問に混乱していたお話です。

どっちが正しい文ですか？？

もちろん、主語が二人だからareですよね。

って答えたら不正解。

ニヤニヤ顔の先生。なぜ嬉しそうなんだ…

 なんとこの場合のfriendはmy sisterと同一人物らしい。

主語は「私の妹(姉)であり友達である人」だから単数扱い。

My sister and my friend are going to Canada.

↑のようにtheとかmyが入ると別人になるみたいです。

◎　There is a lot of people.

×　 There are a lot of people.

なんでやねーんと言いたくなったけど、

同じ意味でもa lot of かlots ofかでbe動詞は変わるらしい。

There are lots of people.

ならOKだそう。

a few や a littleも同じく。

◎　Two hours training is required of everyone.

×　  Two hours training are required of everyone.

単位とか時間はsがついてても単数形扱いだそうです。

◎　Red beans and rice is my mom's favorite dish. 

×　 Red beans and rice are my mom's favorite dish. 

これ難しいですよね。

is が正しい理由は、ラストワードのdishにあり。

もしdishでなくてdishesなら

◎　Red beans and rice are my mom's favorite dishes.

areを使うのが正解。

Red beans と riceがそれぞれママの好物、主語は二つ、だからare。 だからdishes。

Red beans and rice is my mom's favorite dish. 

 では、Red beans and riceが単数形として見られているそうです。

お赤飯みたいな混ざって一つのお料理。だからis。だからdish。

be動詞の勉強ってはるか昔に終えた気でいました…
